training curriculum: law enforcement and people with i/dd*

*The model curriculum is currently being revised to reflect changes to the Maryland Police Training Commission’s training objectives on Crisis Intervention. Content on the revised objectives is expected to be completed by June 2025. Supplemental training materials will be developed during the remainder of the 2025 calendar year.

Developed by the Ethan Saylor Alliance, this downloadable curriculum is available to train law enforcement and first responders on appropriate and effective interaction with people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

It has been approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions and meets the entry-level training objectives 09.15-09.21. It is imperative for self-advocates to have meaningful roles as educators in the implementation of this curriculum. The importance of self-advocates as trainers, particularly for role-playing and scenario-based learning opportunities, cannot be overstated and has directly created a significant positive impact among training participants.
